Everything you ever wanted to know about the Green Machine.
The Cessna 172i was the first 172 model to incorporate the Lycoming O-320-E2D/150hp engine. Interestingly the last model to feature the same engine is the 172M (GHTD), which is the Model in which Cessna changed the airspeed indicator from MPH to Knots. Who needs a quick conversion chart?
GHEV’s Transport Canada history goes back to 1982 when she was purchased by Kent Avn Ltd. In that same year GHEV was sold and held by a couple of private owners until being sold in 1984 to the Chilliwack Flying Club. So, if you have ever wondered why GHEV yaws east when taking off from CZBB, you now know why. 🙂 From 1985 to 1998 GHEV was back into private ownership but apparently couldn’t get the valley out of her system. In 1998 she found her home with Fort Langley Aviation Ltd, where she remained until 2002. In 2002 Ron Whitehouse purchased GHEV and kept her airborne until 2012, the year AirShare took over the yoke.
There are a few subtle differences with the Model I versus later models, the main one you will notice is that the master power and alternator are not a split rocker switch, but simply a single pull knob. The lights are also pull knobs, not rocker switches. The door handles are also an older style, make sure the handle is pointed fully forward to properly latch the door.
In 2023, HEV’s front seats were re-upholstered. The floor carpets have also been replaced. In August 2023, the old GPS unit was replaced with a Garmin Aera 660.
Note: HEV’s Airspeed Indicator reads in MPH, not KIAS.
